The Florida Freedom School is a grassroots collective of educators, artists, and activists who are dedicated to building knowledge, skills, and agency with communities across the state of Florida. Inspired by the legacy of the Mississippi Freedom Schools, we have banded together to create new, alternative, and free spaces for collective learning at a time when public education is once again being molded by white supremacy, heteronormativity, and fascist ideology.

On January 20, 2022, Florida's House Education and Employment Committee passed the "Don't Say Gay" bill (HB1557), which seeks to ban discussions of sexuality and gender identity in school classrooms. Two days prior, the Florida Senate also passed its companion bill, SB 148, which would prohibit public schools and private businesses from inflicting “discomfort” on white people during lessons or training about discrimination.

We reject these laws. In direct opposition to them, we work outside of the public school system to provide accessible and inclusive learning opportunities for K-12 students that engage directly with social justice movements of the past and present. Through our digital lectures, classrooms, and learning resources, we directly and unapologetically address issues and histories of racism, homophobia, sexism, transphobia, colonialism, and capitalism for the sake of an equitable and just society.

As we foster alternative learning environments, we also demand higher educational standards in our public school system that require critical reflection and foster comprehensive understandings of marginalized histories. We hope that the learning methodologies we co-create through the Florida Freedom School can be later utilized by public school teachers once we collectively dismantle the current oppressive system and build a better, democratic educational system that works for social justice and the freedom to learn.

If you would like to contribute to the Florida Freedom School, we are accepting 5-10 minute video lectures, narrated slide decks, podcasts, publications (PDFs) for our free/open digital library, digital art exhibits, and basically anything that can be hosted on our website. Your submission must address a key social justice issue in the state of Florida or with a national scope. Works utilizing anti-racist, decolonial, anti-capitalist, queer, and feminist frameworks are strongly desired. Please email your submission to floridafreedomschool@gmail.com.

By submitting your work, you give us permission to publish your work on our website. We will never claim any ownership of your work and you retain all rights to your work. Authors will be credited for their work and properly cited on our website. Our goal is simply to create an alternative, free, accessible, and radical learning resource for all Floridians affected by the state's oppressive public education policies. We are still figuring things out and welcome all input.
